Dissertation Award for Florian Noseleit

The 2011 Alumni Jenenses Dissertation Prize was awarded to Florian Noseleit for his dissertation "The Role of Entrepreneurship for Regional Growth and Structural Change" supervised by Michael Fritsch. In his thesis, Florian Noseleit studies the role of entrepreneurial activity for regional growth processes and structural change. As a main contribution, a separation between employment growth that directly takes place in the new businesses and growth effects that occur through the interplay with incumbent businesses is introduced. Further, a central extension to previous analysis is a decomposition of the effect of start-ups on regional growth into within-sector and cross-sector effects. The main findings emphasize the importance of entrepreneurial activity for regional adjustments of the industry composition and the quantitative importance of indirect growth effects.
